Keep your car running until it's the age of a classic! New cars can be exciting yet costly. Don't force yourself into having to buy a new vehicle sooner than necessary. Follow these simple reminders to help ensure your vehicle will last you as long as possible!
1. Keep your vehicle serviced and up-to-date
Whether it’s an oil change every 3,000 miles, having a regular inspection, rotating the tires, whatever your routine may be – it’s important to follow a strict maintenance schedule on any vehicle that you own. Letting updates and other services linger – or ignoring them completely – is a surefire way to ensure a quick car death. Tip: check the car’s manual for a maintenance timeline.
2. Check fluids and tires regularly
Along the same lines as #1, you’ll want to make sure that your tires, oil and air conditioner fluids are up-to-date at all times. These are quick fixes; most auto repair places can update these three things in less than thirty minutes.
3. Don’t speed!
Did you know that consistently shifting gears and speeding is murder for your transmission? Also, the more you obey the speed limit, the more money you save – speeding and down-shifting guzzles your gas tank.
4. Baby your vehicle during start up
A cold engine does not need you to “floor the gas” to warm it up. This is actually bad for the transmission. Give the engine at least 30 seconds before popping it in gear and driving off. Give it a little more time if it has sat for more than 24 hours.
5. Be intuitive, and listen closely
You know your car better than anyone – if it starts making weird noises, feels different when you’re driving it, or generally doesn’t “seem ok,” take it in to get it looked it. Better safe than sorry with something as important (and expensive!) as your vehicle.
