What type of insurance do you need?

Did you know that 30 million adults and children in the United States have diabetes? What about the fact that 86 million Americans have prediabetes and are at risk for type 2 diabetes? Or that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes is $245 billion?

The American Diabetes Association has elected November to be the American Diabetes Month. During November, they raise awareness about diabetes and implement different programs to prevent people from getting diabetes. One of their biggest programs is called "America Gets Cooking to Stop Diabetes" where they encourage a healthier lifestyle of cooking nutritious foods and exercising regularly. On the American Diabetes Association website, they offer weekly tips on staying healthy throughout the holiday season, tips on learning how to host a special, food-themed event and you can even vote on your favorite recipes from a holiday meal. Type 1 diabetes is contracted solely through genetics, so there are no prevention methods at the time. However, type 2 diabetes can be prevented. People are not born with type 2 diabetes; it is something that develops overtime from an unhealthy lifestyle.

Here are some steps you can take to prevent type 2 diabetes:
- Eat a healthy diet
- Exercise regularly
- Stop smoking and avoid alcohol consumption
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Eat foods that contain antioxidants
- Limit the amount of salt eaten
- Change your lifestyle
- Make sure your diet contains complex carbohydrates

Spread awareness during November, and remember to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle!
