8 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Fall Weather

There's just something about the fresh smell of the cool crisp air that gets you excited for fall. Leaves changing colors, sunset arriving sooner and cooler weather blowing in. These are signals that fall is here and it's time for a quick fall home maintenance routine.

We've put together 8 easy ways to spruce up your home or fall -serves to help protect your property through the upcoming seasonal changes. Discovering and fixing home maintenance issues now can help prevent and save money from having to handle these problems during the midst of the harsh winter weather.

1. Caulk Windows
Prevent heat from escaping! This can be one of the least expensive maintenance jobs that could possibly save you lots of money on your bills!

2. Gutter Cleanup
Clearing your gutters full of any dead leaves or debris is important before going into winter so little to no rain water will get clogged in gutter and eventually freeze. Freezing water in gutters can make them heavy causing them to break off and possibly damaging the siding. Cleaning gutters can be done with a leaf blower, broom or even with your hands.

3. Inspect Roof
Of course you can call a professional but also you can self-check for any missing or damaged shingles on your roof. Storms in the fall and winter can hit quick and it would be tragic to be stuck with a leak during unwanted weather.

4. Ready Your Fireplace
When the first cold day arrives, you'll be glad the fireplace is ready for use! Carefully check for any cracked bricks or leaks around the outside of your fireplace. It's good to ensure your chimney cap is till in tact and working to prevent any rain/snow or animals from getting into your chimney. Clean out the flue - if in doubt about this, you can call a professional for help. Damper check - it should open and close easily. Lastly, stock up on the fire wood before it's gone for the season! It's usually best to keep a stock of wood inside where it will not get wet from rain or snow.

5. Reverse Ceiling Fans
Many forget that reversing ceiling fans creates an upward airflow that distributes warm air from the ceiling. Try this trick before turning on the heat!

6. Exterior Coverings
Most people know to cover your outside faucets and put away the hose but, many forget the advantage of covering the A/C unit. Covering the air conditioning unit can help prevent rust pileup on those expensive parts.

7. Clean Yard Equipment
Get yourself a few steps ahead for spring and deep clean your lawn mower, leaf blowers and chain saws. Draining the fuel from any gas operated items is a good preventative measure from any leakage and from any damage from the fuel continuously sitting in the gas tank without being used. This also includes covering any grills or patio furniture that are not weather resistant!

8. Air Filter
This one is simple! Time to switch out that air filter and clear out any items that may be blocking your vents. Winter will be here quick - get the most use of your heat!
