What type of insurance do you need?

Moving into a new home is such an exciting and eventful time. Often, you will get busy decorating, painting and spending time making the house look pretty rather than taking precautions to make your new home much safer. Here are 5 things we think are important to do when moving into a new home:

1. Pest-proof Your New Home
Get those bugs out before you move in! Nobody wants to come across a bug problem and have an extra visitor pop into their new home unexpected. Take the time to reach every corner and spray the interior and exterior.

2. Change The Locks
Unless you are building or buying a new build home, chances are someone else has lived in the same house before you. That being said, they probably know garage codes and may still even have a key to the front or back door. Get new locks and make yourself a brand new set of keys - it will upgrade your doors too!

3. Create an Emergency and Evacuation Plan
Scope out your neighborhood, where would you go first if your house caught on fire. Meet your neighbors, exchange phone numbers and include them in your emergency evacuation plan. What if bad weather sprung upon you quickly? Where in your house would you take cover. Discuss these plans with children and babysitters.

4. Clean
It's simple, you don't know how well the people moving out cleaned before you. Don't take on their germs. Deep clean the entire house - it will make you feel like your move was worth it at the end of the day. Places like behind the stove are places that a lot of people miss. Old with the old, in with the new!

5. Window Treatments
While you're unpacking in a new home, many times boxes filled with personal belongings get left open. Don't share with the neighborhood all of the contents in your home. Cover your windows with blinds and curtains. This will also help control the heat.

Staying safe in your new home is important. While moving, it's a great time to make a personal inventory checklist. If you want us to send you a free checklist, please email Lacy at landrews@shropshireisnurance.com -- this inventory list is a great way to keep up with your personal belongings and also allows insurance companies to know what was in your home.
