What type of insurance do you need?

Attention all drivers, we are see this happen often - don't let yourself be the victim!  We’ve all been told how to handle the situation when involved in an auto accident: remain calm, pull over to a safe space if possible, exchange insurance and contact information with the driver, and contact your insurance company. However, what happens if the other driver simply drives off without giving you any information? Parking in the back of a parking lot trying to avoid door dings and careless drivers who are in a hurry doesn't always prevent others from hitting your vehicle and leaving you with thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Here are some tips to think about if you are ever a victim of a hit and run accident.

  1. Call the police.
As soon as you can, call the police and let them know that you have been in an accident. If the driver leaves during your call, let the operator know

  2. Get as much information as possible.
Write down everything you can about the other driver such as license plate number, make and model of the vehicle, location of the accident, direction the vehicle is driving away, and any statements from other witnesses at the scene. If you are able, take pictures with your phone to provide further evidence to the police and your insurance company. As tempting as it may be, do not attempt to follow or chase the other driver.

  3. Call your insurance provider.
If you are a victim of a hit and run, you can still file a claim with your insurance company. Be sure to give them all of the information you were able to gather at the scene to help you get a successful claim. You may also consider contacting an attorney to handle the legal aspects of the hit and run incident as it is illegal for a driver to leave the scene of an accident. The attorney may also be able to help you with a personal injury lawsuit to help cover out of pocket expenses from the accident should you not be able to find the driver or the driver does not have insurance.
